How to determine how much light and dark you want to portray.
Look at a picture and determine what areas are in light and what areas are in dark.
As a painter you need to define this before you start your painting. You get to decide where the shadows are and how light or dark they are. By doing this you establish a key. You decide how you want your painting to read.
This is an example to build upon your understanding of "keying" and color choices within a key.
