Abstract Shapes

Scott uses two landscape photos where the shapes of the main subjects are difficult to discern and resolves this dilemma by creating a series of abstract shapes that establish a design which implies the major forms.

In this (and most) situations, the key is to establish a design that implies the character of the landscape that attracts you.

Begin by:

  • Establishing a dark pattern. Remember Harvey Dunn's words, "Darks carry the drawing while lights carry the color".
  • Manage the proportion of light and shadow so that one of the two are dominant.
  • Establish shape and line variety.
