Most landscapes have three values. Scott demonstrates finding these values in a mountain scene.
For a painting to read, it should have a combination of light, middle and dark value shapes.
Once you find the major shapes (using a limited number of lines), your next challenge is to create a value structure by assigning values to shapes. Either light or shadow should predominate; remember unequal distribution of shape and scale.
